and industrial suburb. The charming medieval upper town is reached on foot in few minutes or by cable car from the
station in the main piazza. The church of Santi Michele e Jacopo has a simple brick facade with an interior restored to
original Romanesque appearance. Next to the church is a small cloister which gives access to the Museo d’arte Sacra
which has some fine and rare works.
At the top of the street is Palazzo Pretorio (Certaldo Wedding Hall) originally a castle beautifully decorated with
picturesque coats of arms in stone and glazed terracotta. Around the courtyard are various rooms and a chapel with
beautiful fresco decorations. A terraced garden and a walkway overlooking the town walls provide a splendid view
stretching from the hills of the Val d’Elsa to San Gimignano.
